If you’re unwell and cannot attend an exam or in-person assessment, submit an EC claim as soon as possible – ideally before the exam and definitely within five working days.

- If you did not attend the exam, you may be able to self-certify (that is, submit the EC claim without evidence). Check whether the exam permits self-certification. If it does, then the circumstances would need to be acute (e.g. illness a week before the exam would not be permitted for self-certification). There is a limit of a 48 hour window in an exam period when you can use exam self-certification for an EC for eligible exams.
 - For self-certified claims, tick the relevant box on the EC online claim form and note any limits on the number of allowed claims.
 - It is necessary that you did not attend the exam if you wish to self-certify for that exam. If you attended the exam you will need to provide evidence of your EC claim.
 - If you're unwell during the exam and feel your performance is affected, still submit a claim within the timeframe. You must ask the invigilator to log the incident for supporting evidence. If you leave the exam without the invigilator knowing that you were unwell then you will not be able to claim an EC for being unwell during the exam.

If you miss an exam without submitting a valid EC claim, you will receive a mark of zero.
Note, only students at the UK campus can self-certify for an EC. It is not applicable to students at the campuses in Malaysia or China.
